TL;DR: I made an identity system for DigiFest with the idea of Digital Media being the bridge between art and technology.

DigiFest is an event held at the University of Houston as a way for senior Digital Media majors to network with professionals within the industry. This event allows seniors to present their best works and potentially get hired by companies and get started on their career. DigiFest is considered a formal career fair, and is held once a year during the Spring Semester. This project is focused on creating an identity system for the event in order to bring awareness to it, along with putting emphasis on its importance.

For this project, I chose to focus on how Digital Media acts as a “bridge” between art and technology. In today’s world, technology continues to develop more and more, as is the same with art. However, not many would make a direct connection between the two. There is a gap between art and technology, and Digital Media is one of the major ways to bridge that gap. With this idea of bridging the gap, I created a quite literal illustration of the concept. I created two cliff-like images and separated them with a large amount of space between them to represent said gap. Then, I added textures to those cliffs: a motherboard-like texture to represent technology, and a series of Fibonacci spirals (or golden spirals) to represent art. I then started adding bits of graphics that go along with each of the cliffs’ theme. For example: a camera lens, a smartphone, and a keyboard for technology, and a pen, paintbrushes, and a paint bucket for art. The graphics are placed in the cliffs, sometimes with them poking out of the cliffs to add a sense of movement, along with making it seem like the two sides are trying to reach out to each other, to bridge the gap between them, themselves. The camera lens graphic and the Quick Select icongraphic have been added to the top corners of the cliffs to show that the two have some connection. The word “DigiFest” is then put the League Gothic font (one of the University of Houston’s font faces) and made large and bold. It is then centered and placed in between the cliffs to act as the bridge between art and technology, all using the official the Univeristy of Houston color palette.
